About The Project
Mbira Dziva is the result of two lifelong musicians whose love for the mbira music of Zimbabwe brought them together over 20 years ago.
The album Luminous Pool is an intimate portrait of the expansive and fractal-like nature of mbira music as experienced by the musicians.
Mbira Dziva is Tom Melkonian and Melissa Cara Rigoli. On this album they are joined on hosho by Kanukai Chigamba and Krishna Pulavarti. This project would not exist without the support of our many teachers and friends from Zimbabwe and beyond – to whom we will forever be grateful.
Mbira Dziva principally plays on mbiras made by Tute Chigamba, Leonard Chiyanike, Fradreck Mujuru, Samson Bvure, Gift Rushambwa and Newton Cheza Chozengwa “Matemai”.
DZIVA (noun)
A pool of water. May be small or as large as the ocean, and can often be considered sacred; A place that holds water even after the river has run dry; A totem meaning “those of the water”. (Language: ChiShona / Origin: Zimbabwe)
